A W 5 × 16 steel beam is used as a column that is rigidly attached to the ground and supported by a continuous cable CBD. The cable is taut and prevents motion of point B in the x-z plane (i.e. acts as a pin for y-axis buckling), but offers no restraint to motion in the y-z plane (i.e. is unsupported for x-axis buckling). The column has a length of 24 ft, and the cross-sectional properties are listed below. Cable segments BC and BD each have lengths of 30 ft. Assume E = 30 × 106 psi.
