Researchers analyzing an unknown hydrocarbon with chemical formula CxHy found that 225 grams of O2(g) were required for complete combustion of 1.0 mol CxHy, to form CO2(g) and H2O(g) only. Unfortunately, a faulty valve between the furnace and absorbers allowed some of the gas produced to escape before the mass of CO2(g) and H2O(g) were measured. The researchers also know from previous reactivity experiments that CxHy has at least one ?-bond. It will take at least a week to have a replacement valve sent from the manufacturer, but the grant proposal, which requires the molecular formula, is due on Monday. Can you help determine the molecular formula of the compound? [Hint: from the balanced equation for the complete combustion of CxHy it is possible relate the moles of O2(g) required to the unknown subscripts x and y. Then see if you can find a formula satisfying the relationship.
