According to Ian Hacking, he uses ecological niche to explain transient mental illness. He says, we are struck by the fact that sometimes the mental illness and some arrangements of symptoms are central at sometimes in some places but are absent at other times and from other places.

With that in mind and from the psychiatry context, what are some examples (It can be any kinds of examples - its opinion based) of the social, cultural, institutional, and demographic conditions (Such as beauty, behaviour, personhood, etc) that have made social anxiety disorder (SAD) a recognized way of "going mad" in North America?

One example I thought of is an individual recognizing themselves as gay or lesbian. There are articles that prove that culture and societies need to change and be more accepting when it comes to topics like this. When an individual identifies themselves as gay/lesbian, sometimes they are pushed to not talk about it out loud because of society's judgement. This can lead the individual to self-isolate - so-called "going mad".
