When I first looked at the following compound, I thought hexane was the primary longest chain of carbons. But, the answer on this site called it pentane with one of the CH3 as a substituent. Why is that?
Also, how would you know that the substituent CH3 is connected to the 'CH' group (i.e. 2nd carbon from the left) instead of the methyl group on the left end?
