According to Valence Bond Theory the oxygen atom in methanol molecule forms sp3 hybrid orbitals prior to bonding with the carbon and hydrogen atoms. Does the oxygen atom on acetone molecule form sp2 hybridization preceding its bonding with the central carbon (sp2 hybridization) or it doesn't hybridize but simply using the available p orbitals for those sigma as well as phi bonds with the central carbon?
