Purpose of this assignment

In this era of technology, competition and constantly changing environment, organizational structure and culture are key factors contributing to employee motivation, job satisfaction and productivity. Organizations that are able to design and implement a structure that brings out the best of every employee, and develops the communication, teamwork and leadership abilities of its employees by slowly and gradually developing its culture, are able to perform better than its competition.

This unit will develop learners’ ability to understand the behaviour of people (specifically employees) within organisations and to recognize the significance that organisational design has on shaping that behaviour.

Scenario

You are a manager working at a management consultancy group, which helps organizations improve its culture, structure and performance. You are asked to help an organization that you can select from the below given list.

Recently, some of the employees at your selected organization have not been performing well. Furthermore, a recent survey has shown that majority of the workforce is not happy with their job and are hence not putting in enough effort to perform their duties well. This has alarmed the top level management in the organization.

There are many organizations where it is evident how organizational structure and culture is driving better performance. Telenor and Pakistan Tobacco Company are two cases in point. You can use the literature on these two organizations to enhance your understanding, when attempting the tasks in this assignment.

Task 1

You are asked to report your findings to executives of your client organization. You are required to assist them in understanding organizational structure, culture, leadership and management. Help them identify their role in the overall success of the organization.

Produce a report to brief and inform management of your selected organization in which:

a. Explain why employee in some organizations are happy with their job, puts in more effort, believes in team work, helps fellow workers, adapts quickly to change, arrives early and gets the job done, whereas in some organizations, employees are the complete opposite to this. You are also required to discuss some of the factors which influence individual behavior at work and how it can play a role in influencing employees to exhibit the above given characteristics (listed in the beginning of this paragraph).

b. Differentiate between the structure and culture of a tall and a flat organization, by referring to at-least two sources (preferably books) and also explain the kind of performance you can expect from both these different types of organizational structures. Furthermore, explain what can be the possible implications of these findings for your selected organization.

To achieve M1, you will make effective judgements about factors affecting organisational structures and culture in your selected organization.

To achieve D1 you will have reached conclusions which draw out the links between culture and management style and organisational objectives and the impact of the organisations’ structure, culture and leadership on organisational performance of businesses. You will provide an evaluation which will suggest how this knowledge might be of value to management to help improve the performance at your selected organization.

Task 2

Prepare a brief report that compares the effectiveness of different leadership styles in two of your selected organizations. Furthermore, analyze the structure & culture, processes & procedures of two selected organization[s] and identify, which management approach is in practice and then assess the effectiveness of those management approaches and report the implications of these findings for the management.

To achieve M2, you will have used suitable techniques to explore the nature of organisational culture in your selected organization and the details will have been used to inform the briefing paper for the management.

To achieve D2 you will have demonstrated an effective approach to independent research and study and will have met the deadline to submit the tasks and achieve the unit assessment criteria.

Task 3

In this task the learners are required to demonstrate their understand of the ways in motivational theories and leadership styles can be used in various organizations.

a. Discuss the impact that different leadership styles may have on motivation in organizations in periods of change

b. Compare the application of different motivational theories within the workplace.

c. You are also required to evaluate the usefulness of a motivation theory for managers.

To achieve D3, you will have applied Innovation and creative thought in your analysis (and comparisons of the different theories and styles) to suggest which motivational theory and leadership style is better for driving and motivating employees.

Task 4

In this task learners are required to demonstrate understanding of the mechanisms for developing effective teamwork in organizations by explaining the nature of groups, factors that promote effective teamwork and the impact of technology on team functioning.

a. Explain the nature of groups and group behavior within organizations

b. Discuss factors that may promote or inhibit the development of effective teamwork in organizations

c. Evaluate the impact of technology (such as mobile phone, conference calls, emails, skype, and online collaboration tools; Google Docs and Dropbox etc) on team unctioning within a given organization.

To achieve M3 the work and analysis you present will be presented in suitable business formats, properly structured, and will use business terminology accurately.
