Assignment:

The student is to use critical self-reflection to achieve personal and professional self-awareness about their practice in relation to core practice skills and the need for professional development. Engaging in critical reflection and critical thinking assists the student in becoming a life-long learner in their personal and professional life. Student is to use the Gibbs Reflective Cycle (Gibbs,1988) to structure their reflection. See components below. The student is to reflect on the interview example provided for assessment 1, OR an example from their own experiences of undertaking a mental health assessment in a health care workplace context.

Provide at least 3 current (within 5 years) and relevant references to support the reflection.

Gibbs Reflective Cycle (Gibbs,1988) components:

1. Briefly describe the mental health assessment that you are reflecting on

2. Explain how the mental health assessment made you feel and why it made you feel this way.

3. Evaluate the positive and negative aspects of mental health assessment and the implications ( with reference to the legal, ethical and professional implications ) .

4. Analyse the mental health assessment you observed or conducted and the aspects that affected your clinical learning ( level of engagement, development of therapeutic relationship, was the goal of assessment clear , was it collaborative, was there evidence of recovery focussed language, etc) .

5. Identify what you could have done/ or could have been done differently in the mental health assessment to enhance your learning experience to inform your future practice? (eg. setting, flow, length, skills of the interviewer, engagement with client etc.) -

6. References related to the topic and self reflection.
