Case Study:
Sandra, a 28-year-old bi-racial female, is seeking treatment for depression at a local wellness center that provides multiple services including: therapists, social workers, addiction counselors, as well as classes in yoga and art therapy.
After several sessions, Sandra begins to talk about her feelings of anxiety around driving. She says that she has been pulled by the police numerous times in the past year, and now she is fearful of driving. Sandra believes she might be being targeted because of her race. She is bi-racial, though, and always could identify with both sides of her family. Sandra explains that her mom has accused her of making up stories and has told her that her race has nothing to do with it. Sandra recounts how her mom has called her a victim throughout her life, including incidents in the past when Sandra was accused of cheating during high school and stealing from her roommates during college. Listing all of the events make her realize that their combined impact over her entire life is a form of trauma.
