John, a 28-year old first time father, was watching his 4-month old baby for the weekend while his wife is away at a sales meeting. Things were going well. He had run out of breast-milk to give the baby, so he went to the store and get some formula. The baby responded well to the formula - consuming an entire bottle in one feeding. In an hour or so he noticed a smell and figured it was time to change the baby's diaper. To John's horror, the baby had a very wet diaper (to include diarrhea) and a bright red rash all over her butt. After he cleaned up the mess, he looked around the baby's changing table for remedies for this horrible rash, but he could not find anything. As he was about to panic, he remembered some useful acid-base chemistry from a class years ago. He opened the refrigerator and found something that would help alleviate the rash.

1. What could have John used to help with the diaper rash? From a chemical standpoint, how does it work?

2. What is the acid-base chemistry of this case?

3. Write the balanced chemical equation(s) that represent this chemistry
