While the Declaration of Independence (1776) famously asserts that "all men are created equal," the Constitution (1787-88) never once mentions equality. On the contrary, it has been noted that the Constitution increased inequality through strengthening slavery by establishing the 3/5 Clause, the 20-year window on slave imports (leading to a predictable increase in the slave trade), and a fugitive slave law. All that said, the Constitution still provided a Bill of Rights and began with the revolutionary sentiment "We the People." How are we to explain the American Revolution's -- and specifically the Constitution's -- role in advancing not only freedom but also unfreedom? What might this tell us about not only the origins of the US but also its later historical development?
