We had to do an experiment that depolymerized PET into terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol using 1-pentanol and KOH. One of the post-lab questions is as follows: "Your mechanism will have some leaving groups that are not considered "good" leaving groups in SN2 type reactions. Explain - using an energy diagram and the Hammond Postulate - why it is "OK" to have a "poor" leaving group in this reaction.
