1. Quantum dots, also known as nanocrystals, are a special class of materials known as semiconductors, which are crystals composed of periodic groups of II-VI, III-V, or IV-VI materials. Quantum dots are unique class of semiconductor because they are so small, ranging from 2-10 nanometers in diameter. The size of pencil lead in a mechanical pencil is 0.0197 inches.

a. How many quantum dots fit into a pencil mark on a page ½ " long assuming the quantum dot has a diameter of 7.8 nm?

b. PEZ© candy was invented in Vienna in 1927. The confectionery itself takes the shape of pressed, dry, straightedged blocks (15 mm (5/8 inch) long, 8 mm wide and 5 mm high), with Pez dispensers holding 12 Pez pieces. Assuming that the quantum dot is spherical, how many quantum dots would be contained in a Pez© candy dispenser?
