As part of an internship in a petrochemical company you are given the task of identifying the fractions coming off the distillation tower. The current fraction shows a 1H NMR with only peaks for methyl (CH3) and methylene (CH2) groups, but the integral ratio is inconclusive. You run the sample through the mass spectrometer and find the highest mass peak at M/Z 142 with increasingly larger peaks at 113, 99, and 85.
