  • In the Crito, Socrates argues we have a moral obligation to follow the law. Explain Socrates' argument for this conclusion (known as "The Speech of the Laws").
  • Explain MLK's distinction between just and unjust laws; give an example of a law (past, present, or made-up) that would be unjust by this definition, and briefly explain why it would be unjust in MLK's view.

Be sure to answer both prompts:

  • According to Mill, it's wrong for the government to censor an opinion even if that opinion is 100% false. Why does Mill believe this? Explain his reasoning.
  • Consider the below fictitious scenario; in this scenario, what faces of oppression might the character of Joseph be dealing with, in Young's analysis? Choose two such forms and explain why they apply to the below case.

Joseph works 12 hour shifts at a meat packing plant for $11.00/hour, which is barely enough to cover rent and other living expenses. His supervisors strictly control his workday, limiting lunch breaks to 20 minutes and strictly limiting the amount of time he is allowed to spend going to the bathroom. He sometimes brings adult diapers to work so that he will not have to go to the bathroom, although this strategy is now impractical since adult diapers are too expensive to buy all the time. Joseph is a refugee from a war torn country and lacks proper documentation to be in the country he is working in; because of this, his bosses threaten him with deportation if he complains about working conditions. When he returns home, he smells bad, and as a result his neighbors and peers tend to avoid him.
