During a recrystallization a student takes 1g of a white (colorless) solid and adds 5 mL of acetone. He heats the mixture in a boiling water bath and adds another 5 mL of acetone to dissolve the entire solid. He then places the flask containing the solution in an ice bath. After 5 minutes he separates the recrystallized solid by gravity filtration.
