Nitric oxide (NO) has recently been discovered to have many important biological functions in the immune system, in the transmission of nerve impulses, and in the treatment of heart disease. Nitric oxide is a highly reactive compound.

a) Draw three resonance structures for nitric oxide (include formal charges when appropriate)

b) Which of the structures that you drew is the major resonance contributor and why? Which one is the second best?

c)Why is nitric oxide such a highly reactive compound?

and as a general question, I can't seem to identify when a compound even has a resonance structure. In other words, how do you identify whether a particular compound has resonance structure or not?
