4 moles of nitrogen gas is placed inside a piston and cylinder device. The piston has a mass of 50 kg and an area of 0.05 m2. 100 kg of weights are placed on the piston. After coming to equilibrium the piston is locked into place. The initial temperature of the gas is 290K. If 25,000 J of heat is added to the gas what will the final temperature and pressure be? Assume no heat losses and that nitrogen behaves as an ideal gas. Heat capacity data are available in Appendix A.II of the text. If the piston had been allowed to move freely during the heat addition would the final temperature be higher or lower? Explain your answer.
