The copper II ion gives a characteristic blue solution in water due to the formation of the hexaaquacopper(II) complex ion, Cu(H2O)6^+2 (aq), where 6 water molecules surround and bond octahedrally to the Cu^2+ ion. The H2O molecules above and below the equatorial plane are more loosely bound. For convenience this ion is often written as Cu^2+(aq) Addition of NaOH to the Cu^2+ (aq) solution causes a precipitate of Cu(OH)2
