Question- In a gridnard reaction Magnesium, a crystal of iodine, and a stir bar are but in a flask at the bottom of a reflux condenser. A solution of 3-phenylpropyl-bromide and anhydrous diethyl ether are introduced into the warm flask. After a slow addition and 30 minute reflux the product is pored over dry ice. This product then has HCl added to it.
Question- Why is the iodine added? What is the role of the magnesium in this reaction? Why is the 3-phenylpropyl-bromide mixed with anhyrous diethyl ether? What does the dry ice do? What does the HCl do?
These questions are not in the book, so I just need the full solution of deriving
You will be needed to synthesize the ester, benzyl butanoate, which is responsible for the scent of the rose in the lab. Depict the skeletal structure of the carboxylic acid and alcohol you would use to make your scent
Microorganisms reduce carbonyl compounds to alochols stereoselectively. 5-chloro-2-pentanone is reduced to (S)-5-chloro-2-pentanol in this way. Distillation of this alcohol over sodium hydride gives a chiral cyclic ether.
