Explain a major buffering system in the blood

Question- A major buffering system in the blood is H2CO3/HCO3-. At first glance this would appear to be a poor choice. At the normal blood pH (7.4) a solution of H2CO3 and HCO3- will change pH abruptly if small amounts of acid or base are added since the pKa of H2CO3 is 6.4.

Offer an explanation for this apparent contradiction. Support this argument with appropriate chemical equations. H+ (aq) + HCO3- (aq)<=> H2CO3 (aq) <=>CO2 (g) + H2O (l)

I want you to explain the chemistry in this problem
