Looking at the example of the internment of Japanese Canadians, and using the five questions on the content page as prompts, post your thoughts on whether the response of the Canadian government was an effective and successful way to address the social injustice. Support your opinion with evidence and be prepared to outline what you would consider as hallmarks for effectiveness and success in this situation. Please answer the questions below to answer this:

  1. No one will argue that there was an atmosphere of distrust and paranoia during WWII in much, if not all of the Western world, but was that the only cause for the degree of racism that existed in British Columbia in this period? Were there other social and/or political factors?
  2. In many cases, the confiscated homes and property of the interned Japanese Canadians were given to Canadian soldiers returning from the war. Is there any significance to that?
  3. What were the reasons given as to why Japanese Canadians were still interned four years after the war had ended?
  4. Why did Prime Minister King offer to deport Japanese Canadians "back" to Japan when many of those interned were Canadians by birth?
  5. Considering that many of those who were interned during WWII were no longer alive to accept Canada's apology, who did the reparation really serve?
