Assignment:

In this module we looked at the birth of civilization and the transition from nomadic, hunter-gatherer societies into sedentary, civilized societies. To give you a better understanding of what life was like for hunter gatherers, and to show you what a massive leap the Agricultural Revolution was, I've come up with a little extra credit assignment here.

This assignment is worth up to 5 extra points added to your semester total.

The History Channel has a show called Alone in which 10 individuals are dropped off in the Canadian wilderness with only a backpack of 10 basic survival items. The contestants are scattered so that there is no change they will bump into each other, and each must construct shelter, find food, and survive in the wilderness. If survival becomes too much the contestants have a satellite phone to "tap out." The last contestant standing wins.

Assignment Instructions

Watch the first episode of season 1 of Alone and answer each of the following questions in a paragraph for each bullet point:

  • Describe three example of how the contestants are living a primitive, hunter-gather existence.
  • Describe three reasons why the contestants aren't quite living a fully "primitive" existence.
  • Given enough time in their situation, would any of the contestants be able to establish civilization? Why/why not?
