(1) Examine the short-term and long-term effect of downturns and of laying-off employees and what alternative managers can consider before deciding to lay-off employees as well as the ethical obligations of the managers towards the employees.

(2) Discuss the reasons behind the high compensation of top executives and CEOs in particular. You should examine the evolution of the CEO compensation structure over the years, and why it has become a controversial issue. You should also outline the various components of the compensation structure of a CEO and the implications of high CEO compensation on the performance of the organization and on the morale of lower-level employees. Finally, suggest some measures to solve the controversy.

Your arguments should be backed up by research articles in best academic journals (e.g. Journal of Management, Strategic Journal of Management, Academy of Management Journal, and Journal of Management Studies, Harvard Business Review, etc.). I expect you to be familiar with, and drawing on, theory and research published in the best academic journals. Be wary of content from poorly-ranked journals. References and in-text citations of references should follow the APA style. The individual assignment length is 3-5 pages long.
