Paper Content: Evaluation of the HR of a local health care organization

The summary paper will direct the student to apply the general HR knowledge provided in the text to an evaluation of a local health care organization (hospital, assisted living center, outpatient care center, health insurance company, home care company etc.). Using three major areas covered in the module/text, the student should evaluate the importance of those elements in the operations of the chosen health care organization. Three major areas should be drawn from among the following issues:

  • Human resource management (an overview, its environment, EEO, Affirmative Action, HIPAA, and job analysis)
  • Accreditation issues
  • Human resources planning, recruitment, and selection
  • Human resources development
  • Compensation and benefits
  • Safety and Health, and
  • Employee and labor relations

The summary paper must identify:

a) The main issues in the three chosen areas and how they are illustrated in the chosen organization,

b) New learning that has occurred on the part of the student,

c) Class activities or incidents that facilitated learning and understanding of HR issues,

d) Potential impact to future career plans, or even in the student's personal life at home.

While most of the paper should clearly demonstrate the student's ability to apply the knowledge gained in this course to the evaluation of a specific health organization (points "a" through "c"), the student is encouraged, particularly in the introduction and conclusion sections of the paper, to consider the impact of what he or she has learned about future career plans or personal outlook.
