In this Study Room we will practice identifying, describing and evaluating the informal fallacies of propter hoc ergo hoc and appeal to authority (and remember, this is not always a fallacy).
FIRST POST
1) Provide an example of ONE of these fallacies that it not presented in the textbook or one of the other resources that we have studied. These are not hard to find or invent.
Think of instances where people argue that X causes Y because X happened before Y. There are lots of them. And remember--cause-effect relationships can be very complicated relationships to grasp and justify.
Or, think of an argument that relies on an "expert" or an "authority" that is weak or just plain bad.
2) Then, explain why the argument you present is an instance of one of these fallacies.
SECOND POST
Comment on the post of another student. Rules of civility and decorum apply, of course. Offer critical comment, or elaborate on the argument-- or try to give another argument that is similar. You may discover that this common pattern of argument is frequently used in other contexts.
