Ethics and Culture

Take one of the following scenarios and evaluate the possible approaches. Also, consider whether they would be handled differently on a collocated team or on a virtual team. For your chosen scenario, assess what cultural factors may be involved and how you would determine what actions to take, and what additional information or learning you may need before taking action. As a guideline your paper should be three to five pages.

Scenario 1: You are leading a project team made up of people from several countries and cultures. During an initial onsite project kick-off meeting, you notice that some of the non-U.S. males on the team seem to expect female members of the team to do things like take the meeting notes and ensure there are refreshments available. Also, these same males seem to prefer to involve other males in important decisions.

Scenario 2: You are part of a project team working on a project that requires certain licenses or permits to be obtained in a non-U.S. country in order for the project to proceed. A member of the project team based in that country advises the team that in order to assure the permits are obtained in a timely manner, a small unofficial "fee" should be given to the administrator who is in charge of issuing the needed permits or licenses.

Scenario 3: Your multi-country virtual project team is nearing an important milestone and there are some important deliverables that must be completed by that milestone for the project to remain on schedule. Some members of the team are working extra hours and are trying to coordinate conference calls with other members of the team in order to collaborate to complete these deliverables by the required date. Some of the other members of the team are working only their normal hours and decline attempts to schedule conference calls during their traditional non-working hours.
