Joe found a mineral sample that merely contained barium carbonate and calcium carbonate, BaCO3 and CaCO3. A 5.94 gram sample of this mineral produced carbon dioxide gas while heated in a complete decomposition reaction. In reactions of this type, the carbonate decomposes into the CO2 gas also an oxide is left. Therefore both of the compounds in the mineral produced CO2 gas and oxides which have the formula BaO and CaO. The volume of the CO2 gas was compute at 1 atmosphere pressure and 0 degrees Celsius (273 degrees K) to be a total of 896 mL of gas. Evaluate the percentage of barium carbonate in the mineral sample.
