Determine the limiting, excess reagent & percent yield of the reaction.
Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid, C9H8O4) can be made by reacting salicylic acid (C7H6O3) with acetic anhydride [(CH3CO)2O] by the following reaction:
C7H6O3 (s) + (CH3CO)2O(l) → C9H8O4 (s) + CH3COOH(l)
In one reaction, 7.947g of salicylic acid and 12.65mL of acetic anhydride react to form 5.961g of aspirin.
a. What is the limiting reagent? (The density of acetic anhydride is 1.080g/mL)
b. How much excess reagent is left after the reaction reaches completion?
c. What is the percent yield of this reaction?
