As Americans moved into the mid-1960s, liberal ideas and reform initiatives persisted and motivated other marginalized groups to demand equality and justice. While some political, economic and social advancements were made, for some, equality and equity remained far from realized. International conflict abroad, specifically in Vietnam, escalated, intensified, and divided the American people on a level unimagined. As the decade ended, a clear division existed within politics and society that set the wheels in motion for conservative pushback against liberal ideas.
