Darby Company, operating at full capacity, sold 74,250 units at a price of $84 per unit during the current year. Its income statement for the current year is as follows:

Sales $6,237,000

Cost of goods sold 3,080,000

Gross profit $3,157,000

Expenses:

Selling expenses $1,540,000

Administrative expenses 1,540,000

Total expenses 3,080,000

Income from operations $77,000

The division of costs between fixed and variable is as follows:

Management is considering a plant expansion program that will permit an increase of $588,000 in yearly sales. The expansion will increase fixed costs by $58,800, but will not affect the relationship between sales and variable costs.
