Question

1. First off both parties laid claim to the language of liberty and each accused the other of engaging in conspiracy to destroy it. The Federalists were supporters of the Washington administration who favored Hamilton's economic program and close ties with the Britian. Prosperous merchants, famers, layers, and established political leaders tended to support the Federalists because their outlook was generally elitist, reflecting the traditional eighteenth-century view of society as a fixed hierarchy and of public office as reserved for men of economic substance which were the rich, the able and the well-born, as Hamilton put it. The federalist also believed that Freedom did not mean having the right to stand up in opposition to the government. Now the Republican party was led by Madison and Jefferson. The republicans were far more critical of the social and economic inequality and more accepting of broad democratic participation as essential to freedom.

2. Judith Sargent Murray answers the argument that offering education to women will lead them to neglect their "domestic employments" by saying that women and men are both equal in mind and soul by nature. When she quotes "Your domestic employments are sufficient", she asks if it is reasonable for a "candidate for immortality, for the joys of heaven, and intelligent being" be subjected to spending eternity studying the works of Deity, that they should be degraded to having no other thoughts than those suggested to them like sewing. She mentions a question that asks if women lack in reason, if that is why they are inferior to men. She says that women can only reason from what they know but their ability to acquire knowledge has been denied, then that cannot be a valid reason to explain the inferiority of their sex. She says that all the arguments used for why the female sex is inferior is because of reasons that men have denied women access to.
