In Jeffrey Trent’s essay he describes how leaders in different fields of Arizona came together, along with SFAz, to bring TGen, a biomedical company, to Arizona. He sites how these same leaders developed a Bioscience Roadmap and created a Bioscience Steering Committee to grow Arizona’s biomedical science industry. In his own words this, “investment in TGen, is one of a new model of public-private partnerships being developed and executed – in this case engaging universities and institutions across the region, state, and country.” He also explains that the bioscience industry will be built upon three pillars of success: collaboration, education, and research. This collaborative style which leverages resources, focuses on education, health, and research will bring Arizona to the top for economic development and global competitiveness.
Do you agree or disagree with the main conclusions of the article?
I completely agree with the conclusions in the article. The rise of globalization and rapid technological advancement has changed how individuals, enterprises, and government institutions operate. With this concept understood the old leadership styles need to change as well. I think the examples from the four Arizona leaders show how a new leadership model can be formed. With time and experimentation, along with education and collaboration other regions can develop their own leadership models that will fit their specific needs and allow them to compete globally.
Was there anything left out of the article?
I can’t think of anything that was left out of the article. I like how each essay was from a different collaborative leader. This article does a great job of explaining the amount of people, effort, and time it takes to develop a region economically.
How could you use the information presented in the article?
I would use this article to explain that with a collaborative leadership style more can be accomplished with more collaborative leaders. With any economic development strategy there will be a need for funding, knowledge, and effort. If there are more leaders involved the load can be spread out or leveraged for leader’s specific talents. I also think that an entrepreneur could use this article to understand that when starting a business look for a region that may be more favorable depending on each region’s economic development strategy.
