Emotional intelligence is (1) the ability to diagnose and recognize your own emotions, (2) the ability to control your emotions, (3) the ability to recognize and diagnose the emotions displayed by others, and (4) the ability to respond appropriately to emotional cues (Whetten, 2011). It’s one of the most important factors in accounting for success in leaders. Self-awareness is a crucial aspect of emotional intelligence (Whetten & Cameron, 2011). Self-awareness relates to being conscious of your emotions and how they affect your personal and professional life.
