Assignment:
For the purpose of this paper I must write, I have to eliminate the First Amendment protection of freedom of the press. Assume the government, through enlightened agencies like the Biden Administration's recently created Disinformation Governance Board could promote concepts and ideas that government leaders, in good faith, believed could unite the country. The goal of this new approach is to move the country in the direction of correcting problems the disorganization that is a fundamental part of democracy has failed to do. During war time, the U.S. government has imposed controls on information for the purpose of uniting the country in support of the war effort. Why couldn't the same approach be applied to eliminating inequality, homelessness, poverty, racism, and other seemingly unsolvable problems. A real "War on Poverty," a real "War on Drugs."
Does the danger of totalitarianism outweigh the possible benefits of government control of ideas in the attempt to secure the greatest good for the greatest number? Is some form of ensuring the freedom of the press, and therefore the freedom to dissent obsolete and outdated because disunity in the country and government leads to stalemate and stagnation? Could the country benefit from government control, approving and disapproving the dissemination of information through a Disinformation Governance Board?
