Experiment: Halogen Reactions

Post-Lab

Procedure:

1.) Adding a small amount of solid chloride salt to a test tube.

2.) Add 2 ml of distilled water and agitate the test tube. And repeat for each other solid halide salt in the set.

3.) Repeat step 1 and 2 using hexane as a solvent instead of water.

4.) Next the halogen will be tested. Adding 1 ml of aqueous water solution of iodine to taste the tube.

(Do not measure the amount in a graduated cylinder. An Approximate amount is good enough, and 20 1drops is roughly 1 ml.)

5.) Now add 1 ml hexane and carefully tap the bottom of the test tube to mix and make sure it mixes; it may take a more vigorous shake, but start gently. (Record the observations)

6.) Bromine under the hood. When finishing pour them into the waste jar.

7.) Add 1 ml of bromine solution to the test tube. (Record the appearance of the aqueous solution). Before that add 1 ml of hexane and mix. (Record the observation).

8.) Since the chlorine is not stable. Add 1 ml hexane to a test tube. Add 0.5 ml Clorox and 0.5 ml 1M HCL to the test tube. (Don't breath the bubbles of the chlorine gas).

9.) Now that baseline observation of each ions and molecules looks like in water and hexane. This reaction will look at possible combination of two reactants. Make sure the solution layers are carefully mixed so the reactants come in contact with each other.

10.)Repeat using the water solution of bromine (Br-) instead of iodine (I-).

11.) Add 1 ml of (Br2) to 1 ml hexane, mix, add water solution of (I-) mix well and record all observations.

12.) And again use water solution of (CL-) instead of (I-).

13.) Add 1 ml of I2 (aq) to 1 ml hexane, mix and add 1 ml of the water solution of (Cl-) mix well and record all observation.

13.) Repeat for the water solution of (br)- instead of (cl-).

Questions

1) Colorimetric refers to the amount of a particular color produced in a reaction, which notes the amount of a particular substance produced. Usually we are looking for how much of a particular color. This is a quantitative approach.

Qualitative means which color or shade. is there. Where there is a range of colors.

2) Fluorine has the highest electronegativity in the periodic table and is one of the few elements that can participate in hydrogen bonding which would make it a weak acid. also hydrofluoric acid is REALLY harmful. it eats through bone mega quick and you need to inject a special calcium derivative into your bone or within minutes you'll end up as a bag of skin.
