Chapter 7:

Effects of Myths and Stereotypes. Describe some of the Latino/Hispanic American stereotypes that you have heard of or encountered. What effect might these stereotypes have on Latino/Hispanic Americans? Suggest ways to manage these stereotypes in law enforcement. In what ways can you help an officer who uses stereotypes about Latino/Hispanic Americans to become aware of the effects of such stereotypes?

Avoidance of Law Enforcement and Underreporting of Crimes. Why do you think many Latino/Hispanic Americans keep to their own communities and underreport crimes of violence? How can police agencies be of greater service to Latino/Hispanic American communities in this regard?

Chapter 8:

Police/Ethnic Community Relations. Discuss the following incident that took place at the end of the holy month of Ramadan in a city close to Detroit: officers ticketed many cars parked across the street from a mosque. According to community people, the stores adjacent to the parking lots were closed, and although parking was technically for customers only, Arab Americans did not anticipate that there would be a problem utilizing the parking lot after hours. From a community relations point of view, the mass ticketing created some very negative feelings and a collective perception that "They (meaning the police) don't respect us; they don't want to understand us." What is your opinion regarding the way things were handled? Do you have any suggestions as to how this situation could have been avoided? Comment on what both the community and the police could have done to prevent the problem.
