In their article "The effects of watching comedy videos on anxiety and vital signs in surgical oncology patients," Genç & Saritas (2020) analyze the effects of comedy videos on anxiety and vital signs in surgical oncology patients. The authors argue that surgical oncology patients often have to endure painful or scary procedures as a part of their treatment which can exacerbate anxiety during the treatment. While various solutions have been identified to address this anxiety, the most of them have significantly failed in effect, affecting patient outcomes. This problem thus needs to be addressed with the aim of alleviating the effects of anxiety on these patients. In examining this problem, the authors posit that comedy videos might be a potential solution to reduce anxiety in surgical oncology patients.

The research question sought to prove comedy videos' effects on anxiety and vital signs in surgical oncology patients. The study establishes a relationship between anxiety, vital signs, and comedy videos and proposes that, indeed, comedy videos have a positive impact on anxiety and vital signs and that this effect is mediated by patient mood. The research question was developed through randomized clinical trials conducted on patients undergoing oncology surgery at a hospital in Turkey. I agree that the research question for the quantitative article has to do with discovering the effect comedy video therapy has on vital signs and anxiety of cancer patients.

The problem statement of a research article is necessary because it helps explain the importance of the research. It informs the reader about the current problem and the negative impact it has on different populations (Nasution et al., 2019). In their research study, Genç & Saritas (2020) discuss how anxiety during cancer treatment is dangerous for patients. The researchers detail how changes in vital signs because of activation of the sympathetic nervous system can decrease health if prolonged. Describing the problem was necessary for this research study because it engages the reader and prepares them for the importance of the upcoming sections in the research article.
