EE002-3.5-2-Control Engineering Assignment - Vehicle Suspension System, Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation, Malaysia
LEARNING OUTCOMES COVERED:
1. Develop appropriate solutions for engineering applications based on control-system knowledge.
2. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a group on control engineering design activities.
PROGRAMME OUTCOMES COVERED:
1. Ability to design innovative solutions for complex engineering problems.
2. Ability to function effectively as a team leader or a member in a team within a multi-disciplinary settings.
Objective -
Ground based vehicles are mechanical systems that encounter vibration over a wide frequency range. This vibration, if transmitted to the vehicle and the passenger, can cause detrimental effects on humans and structural damage to the vehicle. Over the years many automotive designers have been working to achieve effective attenuation of vibration whilst maintaining adequate ride handling and comfort. One way is to design a good vehicle suspension system. The suspension system works by means of spring and damping actions which effectively isolate the passenger from the road vibration. An example model for a suspension system is given in Figure 1 (attached).
The objective of this group assignment is to develop control for the suspension system for both comfort and safety. A block diagram used in assessing the suspension system is shown in Figure 2 (attached).
Tasks -
The students are required to complete the following tasks:
1. Obtain transfer functions for plant and appropriate actuator except the controller. You need to explain in detail how the transfer functions were developed. (Group work)
2. Simulate your system. In the simulation you need to use 2 different road input. Justify the choice of inputs. Discuss the result with respect to your system. (Group work)
3. Identify controller to be used in the system. Explain your choice. (Individual work)
4. Discuss the improvement made using the controller. In the discussion, you need to compare the result with and without the controller. Further improvement also should be mentioned. (Individual work)
5. Present your results.
6. Write a group report.
