Bonding and IMF

a. i). Draw the Lewis structure of benzoic acid a (refer to p.40 in you lab manual).

ii). list all the IMF that exist between two molecules of benzoic acid.

b. i). Draw the Lewis structure of biphenyl (refer to p.41 in your lab amnual).

ii). list all the IMF that exist between two molecules of biphenyl.

c. i). Predict which of the two molecules (benzoic acid or biphenyl) will have a higher melting point. Justify your answer.

ii). One of the two molecules is slightly soluble in water. Which one is it? Explain!

3. Which molecule: water or ethanol is "more" polar? (By "more polar" I mean which molecule will have a larger net dipole moment, or a larger % of polar component). Use a drawing for your explanation.

4. Draw the ion dipole interaction (for both cation and anion) of NaCl in water , and NaCl in ethanol. Below are two figures that represent ion-dipole interaction between solvent molecules and the ions that they dissolve.

In your drawing, replace the arrows with the solvent molecules at the correct orientation.

5. Acetone (CH3)2CO, has a larger dipole moment than water, but NaCl will not dissolve in it. Can you think of a reason why?
