Introduction
The Angiosperm fruit may he described as a mature ovary
When the fruit develops from the ovary alone it is referred to as a TRUE fruit e.g. Mango
When other floral parts develops into a fruit, it is known as a FALSE fruit e.g. cashew A fruit that develops from a unicarpellate e.g. peas or syncarpous ovary e.g. Oranges is known as a SIMPLE fruit
A collection of simple fruits formed by an apocarpous pistil is known as an AGGREGATE FRUIT e.g. Mimosapudica.
A fruit developed from a collection of flowers in an inflorescence is called a MULTIPLE FRUIT e.g. Pineapple.
Simple Fruits
These may be Fleshy or Dry fruits
Fleshy Fruits
Fleshy fruits are succulent in some parts of the fruit. They include the Drupes, Berry Pepo, Pome and Hesperidia
Dry Fruits
Dry simple fruits could be DEHISCENT or INDEHISCENT.
Dry Dehiscent Fruits
These fruits have a pericarp that breaks open forcefully usually with explosive mechanism to release their seeds. Such fruits include the follicle, legume, capsule and siliqua. Get online assignment help to achieve academic success!
Dry Indehiscent Fruits
These dry fruits do not split open to release their seeds. Such fruits include Achene, Caryopsis, Nut, Cypsela and Samara. These fruits are usually one-seeded except in the samara that has 2 seeds sometimes.
