How do present approaches to discipline like time out and even corporal punishment or behavioral charts fair in terms of teaching children what we want them to learn? Are critics of these forms of discipline and charts, like Alfie Kohn, on to something and parents and teachers might need to rethink this issue? Why or why not?

We all have experience with a variety of forms of discipline, whether from our own upbringing or maybe we are parents ourselves or maybe we have simply witnessed other parents disciplining their own child. Thinking about your own experiences with discipline, share your thoughts about this idea that discipline needs to be more of a joining "with" a child, rather than "manipulating" them to do what we want them to do. Does this shift in focus make sense for the child's development? Why or why not?

And finally, what type of discipline do you think is most effective and why? In what way would changing approaches to discipline be challenging for some parents? Keep in mind and respond to this in relation to the different parenting styles you read about. Make sure to support your response with information from the readings and additional research.
