As we begin our semester together the U.S. economy is exploding during an era of industrialization. Watch the video Durant and Railroad from the series Hell on Wheels where a corrupt railroad tycoon describes the process of the building of the Transcontinental Railroad during a Congressional Hearing. As he speaks, there are videos focusing on many characters in the show and even though you might not know them because you haven't watched the show, you can see how the railroad and industrialization is shaping their lives. Do you think that Durant makes a good point that history is written in pencil or do you think he underestimates its role in shaping his legacy? Why or why not?
