"For me, the strength of photography lies in its ability to evoke a sense of humanity. If war is an attempt to negate humanity, then photography can be perceived as the opposite of war and if it is used well it can be a powerful ingredient in the antidote to war." - James Nachtwey.

During the Civil War photographers using the wet plate process could not take battle scenes. Their darkroom had to be close by, the negatives were made of glass. That changed when 35mm cameras came on the market. It enabled the sort of photos that Robert Capa could make. He was the heroic war photographer right in the middle of the action. James Nachtwey believes in the power of photography to change things.
