Do you agree or disagree with the following dissection and why? One paragraph to each one.

Dissection 1

I realize that I am not managing my stress well when I cannot come up with a solution. Stress is often seen as a negative but embrace it to an extent to keep yourself sharp.

Some of these strategies include embracing stress for its strengths. To clarify, being stressed allows me to work with intent as long as I refrain from rushing through things. I feel that it gives me an advantage when going through my day as it pushes me to get things done. I realize that always being stressed is not healthy. I have noticed at my highest stress points in my life, physiological reactions have occurred. For example, I began to break out in hives when there was too many things on my plate which was a mixture of the stress of being a mom, wife, friend, student, co-worker, and oldest daughter.

When asked how I manage stress, I realize that the onus is on me. I must learn to recognize when I am stressed and identify some fast coping techniques. In short, the authors of the academic journal Effective Stress Management: A Model of Emotional Intelligence, Self-Leadership, and Student Stress Coping suggests that effective emotion regulation and self-leadership, as mediated through positive affect and self-efficacy, has the potential to facilitate stress coping among students. (Houghton et al, 2011). I feel that self-leadership is a great way to take responsibility for improper coping techniques of stress. When I realize that I am so stress that I need to take a step a back, I do a few things and one of them include coloring a mandala. This is seen as a form of meditation and coloring therapy when individuals color complex geometric forms, which provide an opportunity to suspend their "inner dialogue" and to deeply engage in an activity that removes them from the flow of negative thoughts and emotions that can sometimes dominate their lives (Curry and Kasser, 2005).I have doing the mandala technique for nearly a year and it has provided me another avenue to spend quality time with my son who loves to color as well. When I come home and I cannot disconnect myself from the buzzing of the daily issues, I do a mandala. Half-way through, I feel a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

Another technique that I use is exercise. Jackons notes, "human and animal research indicates that being physically active improves the way the body handles stress because of changes in the hormone responses, and that exercise affects neurotransmitters in the brain such as dopamine and serotonin that affect mood and behaviors" (2013). I try to incorporate excersie in my everyday tasks. This can be choosing to park further so I have time to think while I walk to my car or walking a delivery myself instead of having a student do it.

These techniques fall in line with the second point of manageming stress in our textbook.Denhart et al describes "taking care of yourself" as a mean to manage stress (2008). The text reminds the reader that stress is a physiological reaction and it important to take care of your health to become resilient to physical ailments.

Dissection 2

The three forms of emotional labor are surface acting which involves displaying emotion that is relevant to the work rather than displaying real emotion. For example, an employee can sad from a personal issue but will still show a positive attitude in the workplace to display positivity. The second form is deep acting which involves encouraging the emotion you must positivity in the workplace; this is normally done by being optimistic no matter what the situation is and being able to encourage that emotion more personally. The third form is genuine emotional labor involves the social norm of emotion that the work normally displays such as nurse as supposed to be calm and nurturing to help individuals in the time of need and not create a state of panic.

I tend to use surface acting the most because I am the store manager and visitor services coordinator at the museum and we get a lot of artist who disagree with certain stuff being display; many want their pieces of work to be displayed where everyone can see and will get upset if they are not. I must be able to show a positive attitude when customers or artist are upset with their experience and having to explain things in a comforting manner that relates to them. Although I do get frustrated at times having to deal with artist and customers who have not have a positive experience and sometimes it is difficult to explain to certain individuals why certain things are the way they are but that does not stop me from smiling and pretending to show an upbeat attitude. It does not affect the relationship I have with customers because there are many who come back after having explained certain issues nor does it affect the relationship I have with the artist whose work is in the store because I always reassure them how they will benefit from certain things and nothing is permanent and everything needs a chance to be displayed.

Dissection 3

This is an extremely hard question to answer without being biased. After reading the question, I cannot help but wonder if the men would like their genitalia mutilated as well. In good conscience I cannot ask UN policy makers to look at this with ethnorelative thinking.  In many other circumstances, ethnorelative is most appropriate however the act of genital mutilation on little girls is horrible. Most of these victims are under the age of six and the mutilation varies (Sharfi et al, 2013). I find this harder to side with because I had a professor in one of classes when I was at a community college that was from an area where women's genital mutilation was practiced. He described a horrible scene of a little girl screaming being held down while they committed this heinous act on her.  This was a moment in his life that he would never forget and as a boy he no power to stop it but now that he is older; he fights for women's rights. There are more complications that occur because of this than any good that is intended from it (Sharfi et al, 2013). Women develop urinary problem and even die from infections.
