Shoshanna Zuboff offers, to some observers, a disturbing assessment of the behaviors of entities such as Google, and Facebook as they use sophisticated algorithms to mine human being's desires, and concerns. Or as she says: "We thought we were searching Google, but Google was searching us."

She also views these developments as a threat to Democracy, in that such actions compromise privacy, and seeks to monetize all aspects of human life.

What might be understood by her observations, and if she is correct, what can be done?
