Introduction

Give a brief introduction to your discussion post. State the three-character traits for which you scored the highest on the Personal Values Survey.

Values Rephrasing

Then, rephrase them as values that are relevant to you in your professional and personal life. For instance, if one of your strongest character traits is "critical thinking," your value statement might be: "I value thinking critically about situations in my life."

Three Emanating Principles

For each of your top three values, identify three principles that emanate from each one (you will have a total of nine principles). For instance, if your value statement is "I value thinking critically about situations in my life," your principle might be: "It is important to fully understand a situation before making a decision." The author provides focused statements of his/her top three values as well a clearly stated principle for each. The author analyzes how each principle is logically connected to the values and explains why the principle was chosen and what it means.

Goal

Finally, create a goal that aligns with a principle you have identified. For example, if your principle is, "It is important to fully understand a situation before making a decision," then your goal might be: "Evaluate career opportunities in my city." The author (you) provides a focused statement of a goal she/she created and demonstrates how he/she used one of the principles as the basis for the goal. The author provides well-reasoned rationale for why the goal is important and how the underlying principle will help the author achieve the goal. Finally, the author draws from his/her experience or observations to assess the types of challenges one could expect and how those might be addressed so the goal can be achieved.

Sharing Comments With Colleagues

First, share with at least two colleagues your comments and thoughts about any three of the principles that he or she has defined. Use the following questions to shape your comments: Do you see a clear relationship between the values and principles? Are the principles really "principles" and not "values" or "goals"? Is there an account you read in your course text, Passion and Purpose: Stories From the Best and Brightest Young Business Leaders, that might have a connection to the principles, values, and goal listed by your colleague?

Questions To Colleagues

Second, pose three questions about the goal that your colleague created that will help him or her critically think about the goal as part of the Individual Reflection this week. Asking important, relevant questions is an important tool in both a leader and a follower's skill set. It may not be as easy as you think to ask good, penetrating questions that can help your colleague. The author provides comments and substantial actionable feedback to at least two colleagues about any three of the principles each colleague defined and uses the questions provided in the discussion forum as a basis. (Hint: You also need to provide your rationale for asking the question. By giving your colleague a rationale for asking, you will on generate fruitful dialogue and help with the reflection process.) Refer to the blog post "How to Ask Better Questions" from the HBR Blog Network when formulating your questions. While you do not need to answer all of your colleagues' questions, you will need to show how you addressed some of these questions as you prepare the BPPG for the Individual Reflection that is due in Week 7.
