One of the distinguishing features in academic writing is that is informed by what is already known or research that has already been complete. Academic writing allows the writer to engage with the research, rather than presenting a personal preference.

Please remember that information you cite from an outside source should be the supporter, not the supplier, of information in your paper. I have witnessed sections within a paper where information from an outside source or sources is the supplier, without a balance between your own voice and the voice of the author or authors.

Once you have selected your topic, the next step is to write your introduction or background from the topic using our own voice, then utilize your research to support your introduction or background (you can either paraphrase or use a direct quote), and finally validate (using your own voice) why it matters.
