Before discussing Crime Theory, we must ensure we operate with common definitions. Theory and hypothesis are frequently used interchangeably in common parlance but have very different meanings.
"A hypothesis is an assumption made before any research has been done. It is formed so that it can be tested to see if it might be true. A theory is a principle formed to explain the things already shown in data. Because of the rigors of experiment and control, it is much more likely that a theory will be true than a hypothesis. (Merriam-Webster, 2023)"
We come up with ideas or hypotheses based on our experiences and view of the world. These are okay or necessarily wrong, but we must remember they are untested ideas. Unfortunately, it is human nature to defend our beliefs regardless of the outcome. This is why double-blinded testing is so important.
In the case of criminal justice, we are dealing with people's lives in both preventing crime but also in how we handle victims, offenders, and those at risk.
Read the attached National Institute of Justice document. Choose one of the What Doesn't Work hypotheses from the list on page seven. In this week's essay, choose a crime from your assigned category. Write about the potential consequences of using this debunked idea to prevent your selected crime.
