Learning Activity #1
ORGANIZATION
Chapter 9 discusses various ways to organize a company including organizational structures which are "simple, functional, multi-divisional, and matrix".
Another way to look at organizational options is that every company aligns to its market by customer, by geography, or by function (or some combination hence "matrix").
Companies that sell one thing to everyone may focus on geographic markets. Companies that need to understand their customers and their issues (e.g. engineering firms, consultants or lawyers) may organize by customer, or by functional expertise.
Global companies that sell many services and products to many customers over different geographies may combine their focus into a matrix structure that connects geographic, customer, and product/functional areas (where, for example, a customer focused account manager works with a product manager to bring the right offering to the customer for a specific situation).
