1. You've read and watched some definitions and characteristics of empires in the material this week. Give three examples of aspects of the Roman Empire that seems characteristic of all empires? What examples of what seems unique to Rome? Be sure to pull examples from the material in the module but you can also use the textbook. (Think about themes we discussed around empires: control, gender, trade, core vs. periphery, etc.)
2. You don't have to read the whole chapter, but read "Movement of Ideas" on page 196 in the Voyages textbook. How does the description of Christianity differ between a believer (Paul) and a nonbeliever (Pliny)? Use examples from the reading (for reading click here).
3. This week we discussed the theory of Core and Periphery (the core being Rome and its area of influence being the periphery). In many ways, Christianity was a story on the periphery of Roman society, but then things changed. Based on the reading, can you explain how Christianity was part of the periphery of Roman culture? Can you show examples when Christianity moves from the periphery to become part ofthe core of Roman culture (being an influencer of Roman society)? (Hint: refer to pages 192-205).
4. Based on the material this week (including the video and readings) how do you explain the end of Rome ended? If so, when did it fall? How might you explain that Rome lived on and in what capacity.
